The Faroes. Prephilately. 1812 folded letter sheet from Leith, Scotland, addressed to "Herr H H Mörck, Thorshavn". Mads Hvads Mörck was Trade Manager in Thorshavn 1805–1831. Picture of the contents is enclosed (the original is in the Danish National Archive). The letter is dated in Leith the 25 April 1812 and was carried by Captain Jurgen Bohnitz by the ship "Den Nye Jubelfest". It arrived in Thorshavn on 18 May 1812. The sender was "Corbett, Borthwick & Company", merchants based in Dock Street, North Leith. From 1810 they were one of the main suppliers of goods to Greenland, but also to a certain degree to the Faroe Islands. According to DAKA the earliest known letter from Great Britain is from 1868, and from any other country than Denmark is from 1851 (from Norway). An exceptionally early letter from GB to the Faroe Islands. A great rarity!
